What is burnout?
For years, thousands of people—and especially women—have suffered from symptoms of burnout, including fatigue, anxiety, chronic pain, gut issues, irritability, and hopelessness. They may have visited their general practitioner and been told there’s nothing wrong, leading to even more shame and isolation.
Today, The World Health Organisation (WHO) includes burnout in their International Classification of Diseases. The new diagnosis relates to work-induced burnout, and the criteria for burnout include:
feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
increased mental distance from one's job or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job
reduced professional efficacy
While WHO currently only recognises burnout in working individuals, we know these symptoms extend well beyond the workplace. In fact, many of our clients have been stay-at-home mums or caregivers to their loved ones. But we still consider this classification a fantastic step forward in acknowledging the real challenges facing women today.
